Conference on ambulatory hip and knee surgery, 24 and 25 June 2016 in Annecy - Imperial Palace Conference Centre

Over the last few years, ambulatory surgery has been the subject of all-out communication based on contradictory or even incompatible arguments, sometimes economic, sometimes medico-legal, sometimes qualitative, often regulatory, rarely medical.

At the same time, the concept of Rapid Recovery After Surgery (RRAC), initiated in northern European countries, has made spectacular inroads in France, in various surgical specialities.
Performing a total hip or knee replacement on an outpatient basis is now very uncommon and controversial, while ligamentous knee surgery, reputed to be "lighter", is still mainly performed in hospital.
RRAC may be perceived as a simple tool for reducing the length of time patients spend in hospital after surgery. In reality, it is a concept based on genuine medical optimisation and overall patient management, where efficiency is at the service of quality. This perioperative management involves multidisciplinary care, a new culture refocused on the patient, which must involve all the players in the care chain (surgeon, anaesthetist, physiotherapist, nurse, secretary, establishment, etc.). Ambulatory care is one of the outcomes of the RRAC, but not the only one...

At this International Congress dedicated to the outpatient management of major hip and knee surgery, we would like to take stock of the state of the art, while exchanging views with the surgeons and anaesthetists who are experts or moderators. Discovering RRAC methods and witnessing the astonishing results obtained during live and outpatient procedures will be at the heart of the programme.
